YOU, ME AND THE STARS
(14th August 2018)
Some scientists, observing the Milky Way,
Say we’re on a collision course with Andromeda.
Both galaxies are heading for destruction –
Taking on speed.
I thought of this last night, looking at the stars,
Replaying our conversation on the phone.
We are the microcosm
Of a clear night, all those lights dazzling
Some moving, some sleeping, some half asleep.
Which ones are we, my sweet?
In another dimension, we’re a mere wish made –
Or could have been made –
A communication neither silent nor speaking.
All our words, our thoughts can be taken –
Yet we’re the total sum of something bigger
Than the night sky dying – or close to dying.
You and I, we’re timeless swirling in a mass of space
With my loss, with my lies
But your light and your truth.
It’s funny how words take on speed.
Individuals find and lose one another – like us –
On a careless doubt that I defined
And then packaged and stamped it unjustly on you.
